Decorated Korean and Vietnam war hero Lt. Colonel Anthony Herbert achieved some media notoriety in 1969/70 over his assertions that top brass in the US military covered up atrocities and other war crimes in Vietnam. He was forced to retire early, published Soldier (ISBN0030914566) in 1973, and sued Columbia Broadcasting System, Inc. for defamation in Federal District Court.
