Playboy's Photo Library records on Diane are skimpy, but Hefner's recollection that she was shot by Bruno Bernard led to his daughter Susan, herself a Playmate -- Miss December 1966 -- and the custodian of her legendary father's photo files. Yes, said Susan, Diane -- a look-alike for famed red-haired stripper Tempest Storm -- was definitely posed in the Bernard of Hollywood style, and was in all probability the first of several Playmates he photographed.
Bernard, who was described as "the Rembrandt of the photographic portrait," left his native Germany to escape Nazi persecution and set up shop in Hollywood, where he became on of the most sought-after photographers of moviedom's Golden Era.
Susan has published several books and CD-ROMs on his works, among them "Bernard of Hollywood's Marilyn" and "Bernard of Hollywood's Pin-Ups: Blondes! Brunettes! Redheads!"
